The Shrub Oak music program is as diverse as our student body. Our primary objective is to give all of our students access to the music making process. We pride ourselves on our ability to meet our students where they are as musicians, which is why our program ranges from instrumental instruction to music theory, and everything in between. Our mission is to welcome every student at Shrub Oak into the world of musical expression and joy!
During campus life hours, we have the opportunity to nurture students’ musical interests beyond the educational classroom. We dedicate time to understanding each student’s needs, talents, and preferences, providing them with a personalized musical experience. Whether it’s playing instruments, composing music, singing, dancing, or simply listening to music, there is something for every student to enjoy during this extracurricular activity.
Some students prefer non-pitched, rhythm-based instruments for expression, while others are more interested in notation and music theory. We also explore popular music genres, delving into the history of modern artists and how their work has enriched our students’ lives. We foster acceptance of different musical genres and encourage students to use music to process and express complex emotions that may be difficult to articulate with words.
Music, in general, offers a wide range of mental and physical health benefits. Our sessions emphasize promoting creativity, inspiration, and mood enhancement. Engaging in musical activities can reduce stress, facilitate relaxation, and encourage positive energy. It also has the power to improve cognitive performance, including focus and memory retention. Social connection with peers and group engagement are also key components of Campus Life Music Sessions.
Art helps students improve and enhance their mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Through the creative process involved with self-expression, students are able to resolve conflict, develop interpersonal skills, manage behaviors, reduce stress, and achieve insight. Art also provides students with the opportunity to express themselves and communicate nonverbally through the use of imagery.
At Shrub Oak, we provide students with a rich and diverse art experience including:
Mixed media – Encouraging students to use more than one method/medium in one project
Exploratory – Encouraging students to try new mediums/methods
Interdisciplinary – Leveraging our transdisciplinary framework to draw from diverse expertise across academic discipline
Environmentally conscious – Striving to recycle and make art out of repurposed materials
And Creative! – Fostering an environment in which we encourage our students to expand on their own creative ideas
