April is National Autism Awareness month. This year, in observance of World Autism Awareness Day, Shrub Oak International School will attend the United Nations’ (UN) panel discussion.

World Autism Awareness Day was first observed in 2008, following unanimous approval of an international resolution on the Rights for Persons with Disabilities by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. The idea behind the original resolution was to “promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity.”
Focus on Women and Girls with Autism
As part of the annual Autism Awareness month activities, UN headquarters will host a panel discussion on “Empowering Women and Girls with Autism” on Thursday, April 5th. According to the UN, girls with disabilities have more of a challenge to complete primary education. While women with disabilities struggle to maintain employment over disabled men and non-disabled women. Shrub Oak’s Head of Admissions, Petra Daitz, will be on hand for the day-long symposium. Panel discussions will focus on the issues facing women and girls with autism and ways to involve organizations in policy and decision-making processes.
