Shrub Oak International School Celebrates Hanukkah Flavors with Foodie Wednesday

At Shrub Oak International School, Foodie Wednesday is one of our favorite ways to explore new flavors, celebrate traditions, and come together as a community. This week, we turned our focus to Hanukkah, a holiday rich with meaning and culinary history, by preparing and enjoying latkes, a beloved holiday dish.

Latkes, often referred to as potato pancakes, are a traditional part of Hanukkah celebrations. These crispy delights are made with grated potatoes, onion, egg, and flour, enhanced by any spices you prefer. While the classic version remains a favorite, Foodie Wednesday gave Shrub Oak students the opportunity to experiment with new ingredients and creative twists.

Our culinary exploration began with a traditional recipe, allowing everyone to learn about the foundational techniques and ingredients that make latkes so special. Once students mastered the basics, we ventured into creative territory, incorporating beets, zucchini, and carrots into the recipe. These vibrant vegetables added color, texture, and unique flavors, making the experience as visually engaging as it was delicious.

Our students took an active role in preparing the latkes, from grating and mixing ingredients to shaping and frying the pancakes. This hands-on approach not only reinforced important life skills such as cooking and teamwork but also encouraged sensory exploration as students handled the different vegetables and observed how they transformed during the cooking process.

Of course, no latke experience would be complete without the right accompaniments. We offered a variety of toppings, including sour cream, applesauce, and pickles, allowing everyone to personalize their creations. Some students enjoyed the contrast of the tangy pickles with the savory latkes, while others favored the sweetness of applesauce or the creaminess of sour cream.

Beyond the culinary aspect, we used this Foodie Wednesday to learn about the cultural and historical significance of Hanukkah. Students and staff shared stories about their own traditions, deepening our collective appreciation for this meaningful holiday. Through conversation and cooking, we connected the symbols of Hanukkah with the joy of sharing food and community.

The day was filled with laughter, learning, and, most importantly, the spirit of togetherness that makes Shrub Oak International School such a special place. By blending tradition with innovation, we not only honored the history behind the latke but also encouraged our students to explore and appreciate diverse cultures and cuisines.

Foodie Wednesday continues to be a cornerstone of our approach to fostering curiosity, creativity, and a sense of community. This week’s focus on Hanukkah and latkes reminded us of the power of food to bring people together, inspire learning, and create lasting memories.
