On Wednesday, September 4, Shrub Oak International School hosted an Open House on campus for students’ families. The exciting event took place from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., and brought together more than 50 families as well as students and staff for an afternoon of engagement, connection, and discovery. Families who could not attend in person were given the opportunity to participate virtually.
The event began with a warm welcome by Sydel Morris, MsEd, our Head of Programs. Families were then greeted by school leadership, who shared insights into our mission and the progress made by students over the past academic year. It was an opportunity for parents to better understand the educational and therapeutic strategies that drive student success at Shrub Oak and to learn more about the various initiatives we have in place to support individual growth. The gathering fostered a sense of unity and collaboration between staff and families, emphasizing that Shrub Oak is more than just a school—we are a community.
Following the welcome, parents made their way to the education hallway, where refreshments were served, and staff were available for a question-and-answer session. This informal setting allowed parents to interact directly with the educators and professionals who care for and work with their children on a daily basis. The conversation was lively, and parents were encouraged to ask questions and learn more about the resources and programs available at Shrub Oak. For some families, this was the first time they had the opportunity to meet in person all the team members who play such an important role in their child’s development.
After refreshments, families were divided into groups for a tour of our campus, which included stops inside the school as well as outside on the grounds. The tour provided a behind-the-scenes look at our innovative facilities, including the classrooms, therapy spaces, and recreational areas. Parents were able to see firsthand the dynamic and nurturing environment in which their children are living, learning, and growing.
A highlight of the day was the opportunity for parents to participate in activities with their children. Our staff carefully planned interactive activities designed to showcase the skills students have been developing. These activities also gave parents the chance to see their children in action, engaging with peers and staff in meaningful ways. For students whose families were unable to attend, staff facilitated virtual activities to ensure that everyone had a fun and engaging experience.
Another highlight was the opportunity for families to stop by our Little Oak Farm Stand where they had the option to purchase herbs, fruits, veggies, and eggs fresh from our farm, and seasonal, student-made goodies and arts and crafts. Our students proudly staffed the stand, demonstrating their entrepreneurial skills to their families.
The event culminated in a trip to everyone’s favorite spot on campus, the Shrub Oak farm, where families had the opportunity to explore and meet our friendly farm animals. Families and staff were able to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and witness firsthand the therapeutic benefits our farm and outdoor spaces offer our students.
The Open House was a tremendous success, serving as an example of the strong partnership between Shrub Oak staff and our families. As Shrub Oak International School continues to grow and evolve, we look forward to hosting more events like these, recognizing the importance of collaboration, open communication, and community. The success of this Open House sets the stage for future family-centered events, which we hope will further strengthen the bonds between our parents, students, and staff.
