Shrub Oak International School Students Take a Special Trip to the Nail Salon

At Shrub Oak International School, we understand the importance of routine for our students. Structure and predictability provide a sense of security, allowing them to navigate daily life with confidence. However, school breaks can sometimes disrupt that stability, making it essential to offer engaging and familiar activities to maintain a sense of normalcy for our students. Over the recent school break, we introduced a special off-campus trip to a local nail salon, giving students the opportunity to experience a relaxing and sensory-friendly outing while continuing to build independence and social skills in the community.

We are always looking for new and enriching experiences to incorporate into our students’ schedules. Our goal is to expose them to a variety of activities that foster confidence, self-care, and enjoyment while ensuring they feel comfortable in new environments. The trip to the nail salon was designed with this in mind, providing students with a calming, low-pressure experience where they could engage in self-care while practicing communication and decision-making skills. Whether choosing a nail color, interacting with salon staff, or simply experiencing the tactile sensations of a manicure, each student participated in a way that felt right for them.

For autistic students, new experiences can sometimes be overwhelming, which is why preparation is key. Before the trip, we worked closely with our students to introduce them to what they could expect at the salon. We discussed the steps involved, from checking in and selecting a service to feeling the different textures of lotions and nail polish. By setting clear expectations and reinforcing the experience with visual supports and social stories, we helped our students feel ready and excited for the outing.

Once at the salon, our students embraced the experience in their own unique ways. Some eagerly selected their favorite colors, while others preferred to observe before deciding. Many found the hand massages soothing, while some enjoyed the quiet ambiance of the salon itself. Staff members at the salon were incredibly accommodating, ensuring that each student felt comfortable and respected throughout the visit. The gentle, sensory-friendly atmosphere provided a relaxing break while reinforcing the idea that self-care is an important part of overall well-being.

Beyond the immediate enjoyment of the trip, the visit to the nail salon reinforced key life skills. Our students practiced patience as they waited their turn, engaged in social interactions with salon staff, and made personal choices about their services. These real-world experiences are invaluable, helping our students become more confident and independent in navigating everyday situations.

We are always eager to try new on- and off-campus activities, exploring different opportunities to see what our students enjoy. Every experience helps us better understand their interests and preferences, allowing us to build a well-rounded program that supports their growth. The nail salon trip was a wonderful success, offering both relaxation and learning in a supportive environment. Moving forward, we will continue to seek out activities that encourage our students to step outside their comfort zones while maintaining the routines that help them thrive.
