Sunday Dance Parties at Shrub Oak International School

At Shrub Oak International School, our Recreation Tam has found a new way to bring joy to our students through weekly dance parties in the Hub, our communal activity and game room in the school. Every Sunday afternoon, the Hub transforms into a lively space filled with laughter, music, and activity, providing students with an opportunity to unwind, socialize, and embrace a wide range of engaging games and activities.

These dance parties are more than just an opportunity to move and groove. They are designed to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where every student feels encouraged to participate in the way that suits them best. Our students enjoy an exciting lineup of games, from classic favorites like catch and  musical chairs to board games, bowling, freeze tag, and more. The variety ensures that everyone can find something they enjoy doing, whether it’s engaging in high-energy physical activities or more relaxed options.

The Hub truly comes alive with the addition of LED speaker lights. As the music fills the room, the vibrant lights add a dynamic and colorful atmosphere, encouraging students to hit the dance floor with enthusiasm. The lights also provide an engaging sensory element, enhancing the experience for students who thrive on visual stimulation.

Music selection plays a big role in the energy of the dance parties. The Shrub Oak Recreation Team makes it a point to involve students in choosing the playlist, encouraging them to take turns picking their favorite songs. This fosters a sense of collaboration and respect, as students learn to listen to one another’s preferences and celebrate the diversity of musical tastes. It is a simple yet meaningful way to practice communication and build social skills in a natural setting.

These Sunday dance parties are also an opportunity for growth. Through activities like freeze tag and bowling, students work on their coordination, motor skills, and ability to follow rules in a group setting. Singing and dancing provide a creative outlet, allowing students to express themselves in a way that builds confidence and encourages self-discovery.

The social aspect is equally important. The shared experience of playing games, dancing, and enjoying music together fosters a sense of community and belonging among our students. For some, this might mean sharing a laugh during a game of musical chairs; for others, it could be the simple joy of being in a room filled with friends. Week after week, we see them building friendships, exploring new interests, and, most importantly, having fun. The Recreation Team’s dedication to creating these moments underscores Shrub Oak’s commitment to providing a nurturing environment where students can thrive.

Sunday dance parties in the Hub are quickly becoming a highlight of the week, and we look forward to continuing this fun activity that brings so much joy to our students.
